On My Bookshelf

I’m currently playing catch up on my reading.

Looking over my 2011 Book List, it became evident that I took a reading sabbatical in July.

But thanks to a friend on Facebook, it seems I’m back on the reading wagon.

I discovered one of my favorite authors, Mary Kay Andrews, has a new book.

I finished it last night.  Great read.

Now it’s on to Karen White.

I have never read anything by her before, but my Facebook friends promise me she’s great.

I’m starting this one tonight.

These books are in my library bag waiting to be read:

Looks like I’m making up for lost time.

What’s on your book shelf?

My New Favorites

-1-

My iPhone has several apps I have downloaded and most of them were free.

I found one that has captivated me beyond others.

The BigOven app has recipes and a place to make a shopping list.

But by far, the best feature is called

“Get Ideas to Use Up Leftovers”.

I spent 45 minutes in my pantry the other day just typing in things I had on hand.

I clicked search and poof!  A list of recipes appeared at my fingertips.

Ahhhhhh

-2-

Pinterest.

According to the about page, Pinterest allows you to catalog all the things you love and browse other people’s favorites.  A virtual pinboard, if you will.  I have already found a lot of ideas for teacher gifts (school is just around the corner), decorating, recipes, and so much more.

I’m still learning about pinning something, but don’t be surprised if my pins wind up here.

-3-

I love how technology adds verbs to our language.  Words like Facebook, Google, pin, text, and email have invaded our language.

Just a random thought.

🙂

-4-

Frog fell asleep in my lap today.  We were watching the big boys play and he simply fell asleep.

Precious.

-5-

I heart The King’s Speech and Colin Firth.

Mr. Firth is certainly not a new favorite of mine (Love, Actually is where my crush began), but I certainly like him even more now.

Have a great weekend!

Land Line vs Cell Phone

We haven’t had a land line since June 28.

And not by choice.

Lightning struck our block that day and wiped out water lines, phone lines, and internet routers/modems.

It’s been an expensive two weeks.

We are thinking of nixing the land line all together.

I posted my thoughts on Facebook last night and got some interesting info:

*some keep a dial tone for emergency use (911) or alarm systems

*most everyone who posted did away with their land line several years ago

*you can still dial 911 without service (this one currently does not apply to us because our line is FRIED and that would require the $200+ service fee we have been trying to avoid)

*alarm systems can be updated to wireless so your cell number can be used

* you can register your cell phone number on smart911 for emergency use

________

But, for me, what it boils down to is this:

That phone number has been our identity since we became engaged.

It was the first thing we shared.

It’s as if my best friend is moving away from me.

It’s hard to just “cut it off”.

sniff sniff

Dude. Three Years Is a Long Time.

…life’s about a dream has been around for three years.

Sheesh.

It doesn’t seem that long.

But then again, in my mind, I am still 20 years old and a size 8.

I digress….

My virtual scrapbook/baby book has evolved into quite a creative outlet.  I am able to update my family and friends in far off places (sniff, sniff) and right here in Downtown, Smalltown, Southeastern USA with pictures and anecdotes.  I have reconnected with my ΑΧΩ sisters from Clemson and discovered several readers are sisters, too!

I usually do a post commemorating this momentous occasion where the behind the scene secrets of the blog are revealed.  Without further ado…

Behind the Scenes, Version 3.0:

__________________________

During Christmas 2007, BP was doing computer stuff with a coworker here at The Money Pit (more on that later) for several days in a row.  During a break, the coworker told me his wife had a blog.

A what??

HyperactiveLu was the first blog I ever read.   Through hers, I started reading others.  Then, one Saturday morning, BP came to me and said, “I set a blog up for you.  It should be much easier than the website we have.”

Whah-lah.

A blog was born.

The title …life’s about a dream came from Frick.  He was actually singing the song, “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” and instead of singing, “life is but a dream” he sang, “life’s about a dream”.  We thought that was pretty profound, especially coming from a three year old (at the time).  And, it is what it is.  Our life is a dream.  BP had his sister make it into a sticker above our back door.

He calls it our mantra.

I call it cute.

BP’s name is derived from his initials.  It’s also short for Big Papa, taken from the song Big Poppa by Biggie Smalls.  It’s my ringtone for BP because he’s cool like that.  Or I’m even cooler like that.

Frick and Frack are nicknames for our older boys.  I used to teach part time in the public schools, job sharing a classroom with another girl.  She and I would joke around, calling ourselves Frick and Frack.  I thought it was clever and started calling the boys Frick and Frack around the house.   It worked well for the blog since I didn’t want our names “out there” in cyberspace.  Sometimes we refer to them as Chaos and Havoc (because they prefer wrestling as an after school activity) or The Farmers (because they are up with the sun each morning).  Uncle B tried to get me to change their blog names to Fred and Barney.  Click HERE for that reasoning.  Alas, Frick and Frack remain.

Frog is the nickname for our newest little guy, born in November, 2009.  After asking the blogosphere for ideas for a nickname, there was quite the debate as to what his nickname would be.  Frog was chosen because some of the other nicknames had  interesting connotations.   Sometimes I refer to him as The Newborn, but obviously he’s not one of those anymore.

Some of our posts refer to a place called The Money Pit. That’s our 110 year old house.  We started a major renovation process here in May 2008.  In true renovation fashion, our budget tripled as they began to chip away at our house.  The Fix It Guys kept uncovering all kinds of damage.  And our bill kept growing.  Hence, The Money Pit.  Like the movie.  Only better.  Then, BP started finishing the inside of the house while I was in Pittsburgh visiting Uncle B, Aunt D and Steeler Training Camp. It was my very own HGTV show!

2010 brought something new around the blog.  I set up a Facebook Fan Page to update my friends who don’t use a reader like Google or Bloglines.  I prefer updating the fan page instead of my personal FB page, but sometimes share the links on both pages.  So if you are not a fan yet and you keep up with us via Facebook, you may want to click that “like” button on the FB link to know about blog updates.  Mom, I am talking to you. K.  Thanks.

Dreamers refers to you, my loyal readers of …life’s about a dream.   As I said above, this is a virtual scrapbook for my children and our memories.  But when I see that others are reading and commenting here on the blog, on Facebook, or through emails, I know my words are not just for us.  And that’s flattering.  Thank you for reading.  And commenting.  🙂

Graduation Guys

We quite possibly had the busiest week ever.

My head is still spinning.

Frick graduated from 4K on Monday, May 17.

It’s extremely unfortunate that I have the WORST camera in the world.  I did not get any really good shots of Frick except for these and they are subpar.  However, I did get some video of their songs.

Santa, please bring me a new camera.  Pretty please with a cherry on top?

Then Frack graduated 3K on Tuesday, May 18.

The highlight of Frack’s graduation was the Tooty Ta:

Peace out, 3K!

Thursday was the day of class parties.  My 4K class had a party at one park.

Frick’s class party was at another park.

And Frack’s class party was at yet another park.

Did I mention they were all at the same time??

My Facebook status for Thursday morning:

Mandy…. has to be at three class parties all at the same time. This sounds like a job for Supermom! Please excuse me while I step into my phone booth….

It’s also extremely unfortunate that Supermom did NOT have a camera to capture these parties.

Like she had time to do that anyway!

Lessons in Life

Lesson #1:

If your baby does not sleep for two nights, chances are he has an ear infection.

Frog’s second ear infection was confirmed at his 4 month appointment on Friday.

Lesson #2:

My Facebook status from Saturday:

Note to self:  Never place reusable shopping bags filled with groceries haphazardly onto the electric stove top, unknowingly flip the burner on, and walk away while the bags melt/smoke/burn.

______________________________

Lesson #3:

Never try to convince yourself that you can in fact have a piece of wedding cake even though you gave it up for Lent (it was almost Sunday!).

Sitting beside your parish priest during the wedding reception will quickly make you change your mind.

God is always watching, eh?

Birth of a Blog, Version 2.0

Last year, I wrote the Birth of a Blog post to celebrate …life’s about a dream‘s one year  blogiversary.

Then all of a sudden, a whole year passed and today is the TWO year blogiverary!

Here’s an updated version of last year’s Birth of a Blog post.  It’ll give you the ins and outs and the who’s who here at …life’s about a dream.
