Nini reluctantly agreed to attend the Ash Wednesday services with Frick, Frack and me.
She is one of those who feel, if the kids cannot sit still or sleep on the pew, they don’t belong in Church. That having been said, both boys were pretty good considering how long the Mass was. Frack got a little antsy with Nini’s pen and paper; but all in all, it was uneventful.
…we strolled up the aisle for Holy Communion.
Frick knows to fold his arms across his chest as a sign that he is to be blessed and not receive the Host. He loves to do this, as it makes him feel like the “big boys”.
I always take Communion and then go to the line where they offer the wine chalice. Frick is familiar with this procedure.
Well, Nini has Frick with her in the Communion line. He receives a little touch and blessing. Nini receives the Host. Frick sees me going to the wine line but Nini, who never takes the wine (this is optional), gently pulls him in the other direction.
His arms fly off his chest, he grabs her hand and says out loud,
“NO, Nini, we need the wine”.
Nini whispers (have you ever heard Nini whisper?!)
“No, Frick, go this way.”
He says, “But NINI, we really NEED the wine.”
Chuckles all around.
Nini wanted to WHISPER,
“You’re absolutely right, I do need the wine but it’s not that kind! Now let’s get the ____out of here! “
